How acupuncture works here

Acupuncture at Pure Health & Wellness is provided by a licensed acupuncturist who works with the practice on an appointment-only basis. She is not on-site every day. When you book, you book a specific slot, and that is when she will be in the office to see you.

Acupuncture often pairs well with the chiropractic and physical medicine work Dr. Hunter does, especially for patients dealing with chronic pain, stress, sleep issues, recovery from injury, or muscle tension that is not fully responding to manual treatment. Some patients come in for acupuncture only. Others use it alongside their regular care.

02

What it is

Acupuncture is a noninvasive treatment in which very thin, sterile, single-use needles are placed at specific points on the body. It has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine and is now an accepted complementary therapy in modern healthcare.

The goal of acupuncture is to support the body's own ability to balance, regulate, and heal. It is generally relaxing rather than painful, and most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is.

What we offer

Beyond standard acupuncture, the practice offers a range of related techniques. Which ones make sense for you depends on what you are working on and the acupuncturist's recommendation after she meets with you.

Cupping

Uses suction to relieve muscle tension and increase circulation.

Ear seeds

Small pressure-based stimulators applied to specific points on the ear, often used between visits.

Korean Hand Therapy

A focused technique applied to acupressure points in the hand.

Electroacupuncture

Mild electrical stimulation added to traditional needling for certain conditions.

Moxibustion

The application of heat at acupuncture points using a dried herb.

Tui Na

A Chinese form of medical massage and bodywork.

What patients commonly come in for

  • Pain relief, particularly headaches, migraines, neck and back pain, and joint pain.
  • Stress and anxiety support.
  • Sleep difficulty.
  • Recovery support after injury or surgery.
  • Muscle tension and chronic soreness.
  • Digestive issues.
  • Menstrual and menopausal symptoms.
  • General wellness and immune support.

Acupuncture is not a replacement for medical care from your primary doctor or specialist. It is a complementary therapy used to support healing, comfort, and balance alongside the rest of your care. If you are dealing with a serious or acute medical condition, please continue to work with your medical team.

05

Signs acupuncture is working

Patients usually notice the effects over several sessions rather than after the first visit alone. Common signs treatment is working include:

Sleeping better More energy Less stress Fewer or less intense headaches More comfortable movement A general sense of being more balanced

The acupuncturist will discuss expected timelines and frequency at your first visit.

How to book

Because the acupuncturist is in by appointment only, scheduling works a little differently than a chiropractic visit. Call (630) 435-0100 to book a time that works for both you and the acupuncturist.

New patients fill out a separate acupuncture intake form. You can complete it before your first visit at purehw.com/acupuncture-intake-form/.

FAQ

Common Questions

Does Dr. Hunter perform the acupuncture himself?

No. Acupuncture is performed by our licensed acupuncturist, who is in the office by appointment. Dr. Hunter handles chiropractic care, soft tissue work, physical therapy services, and clinical nutrition. The two practices work alongside each other.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients say no. The needles are very thin and most people feel little to nothing on insertion. Many patients find sessions relaxing.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a licensed practitioner with sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture has a very low rate of adverse effects. Our acupuncturist follows FDA-required sterile needle protocols and standard safety practices.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you are working on. Some patients feel meaningful relief after one or two visits. Others benefit from a series of sessions over several weeks. The acupuncturist will recommend an appropriate plan after meeting with you.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. Some plans cover acupuncture for specific conditions like chronic pain, while others do not cover it at all. Call (630) 435-0100 to walk through what to expect.

Do I need a referral to book?

No referral is required. Call the office and we will coordinate a time with the acupuncturist.
